I would imagine most people, if they could, would use their birthday as an excuse to sleep in, but not my husband. He was happy to wake up early to go watch the sun rise on his special day. I was grateful that Hurricane Dorian didn’t interfere with our plans!
Off we went to Beach Access #37. It was nice and warm, with a slight breeze (always appreciated because it keeps the bugs away), and although we didn’t actually see the sun rise above the horizon due to cloud cover, it didn’t rain on us, so we’re happy about that.
It was a beautiful spot to do some Book of Mormon reading!
What a great way to start the day!
We went to our normal post-sunrise cafe and discovered that the owners were all ready for the storm as well, so we drove down the street until we found an open restaurant, Another Broken Egg Café. Because it was our first visit, the waiter brought some complimentary biscuit beignets (apparently this restaurant started in New Orleans). Wayne ordered their Eggs Benedict and I tried something I’ve never tried before, an omelet filled with whipped cream cheese and topped with crab and Jack cheese; they called it a Floridian Omelet. It was actually quite delicious, although the cream cheese was a bit overpowering, so I doubt I’ll have it ever again.
Since we were in the area, after breakfast we stopped at our son’s house to help with hurricane preparations there – putting up shutters, dismantling the trampoline and basketball standard, and moving “projectiles” into the garage. The storm track has veered north, so this may not have been necessary, but peace of mind is worth a bit of labor. We’re glad we could help.
We had to read some stories also!
We spent the afternoon relaxing, grateful that we were prepared for an impending storm. Then, since it didn’t seem to be in any hurry to come our direction, which meant that restaurants were still open, we were able to end the birthday celebrating with dinner at our favorite steakhouse. It was a wonderful day!
Note that he was finally able to order their Prime Rib (often they’re out of it early in the evening), their crab cake was absolutely delicious, and I was quite surprised that someone who doesn’t care for coconut ordered the Coconut Cream Pie for his birthday dessert. However, Okeechobee Steakhouse does serve a very delectable version; I guess that makes a difference.
